No Contact address
Real companies want you to be able to find them. Fake
Companies don’t.
-
No Phone Number
Real companies want you to talk to them. Always call the phone
number if there is one. Often fake web sites will use a real
company’s information. Have them verify everything you’ve been told
to make sure they are the ones who will actually be handling the
escrow.
-
Payment to a person or company other
than the Escrow
Real Escrow companies will need you to send good funds
(Wire transfer for immediate use, or Certified check or personal
check with a hold) payable to the Escrow Company. They will never
ask for a check made out to someone else.
-
Incomplete Links on their Web Page
If the companies web page has lots of misspellings or
links that don’t work, it probably isn’t a real company. These
people aren’t trying to drum up new business they are trying to scam
you!
-
Email address doesn’t match their
domain
If their email address is for
escrowOfficer@yahoo.com or
fastescrow@gmail.com it is
probably a scammer! Real companies use email addresses attached to
their own web domain. If the address is on a web service like
Hotmail or
Yahoo! … well that’s not a good
sign.
-
The Bank is in Africa or the
Caribbean
If you ever want to see your money, or the purchase…
keep the money in the United States. Once the money leaves the U.S.
you have very little chance of ever getting it back.
-
When in doubt – Don’t do it!
If you don’t feel comfortable with the escrow company.
Don’t use it. Get a recommendation from someone you trust.
If the other party isn’t willing to switch escrow companies, then
that’s a warning flag too.
-
If the deal seems “Too good to be
true” it probably is!
